Accessories

Set up the boat.

ShiftSail works with nothing more than your phone. A case keeps it dry, a mount keeps it where the crew can see it, an external GPS makes the start more precise and a wind sensor lets ShiftSail see every shift at once.

Phone and iPad

Waterproof cases

Spray, rain and the odd swim. The phone in your pocket is usually water resistant, not waterproof, and salt water is harder on it than fresh.

What to look for
  • Rated IP68, so it survives being dropped in
  • The screen still works with wet fingers
  • A lanyard point, or a case that floats
  • Fits a mount, so you don't need two systems

Mounts

Where the screen sits decides who can use it. On the mast or at the companionway both the helm and the tactician see it, and it stays out of the way of sheets.

What to look for
  • Locks the device, but releases it in a second
  • Marine-grade materials that handle salt and UV
  • Room for the case you use
  • Bases for both tube and flat surfaces

Bluetooth GPS

A phone updates its position about once a second. An external receiver sends ten updates a second, which gives a steadier distance to the line at the start and a cleaner track after each tack. ShiftSail uses it automatically through iOS.

What to look for
  • Up to 10 Hz updates
  • Enough battery for a full race day
  • Works with iPhone and iPad over Bluetooth
  • Mount it with a clear view of the sky

Wind sensor

Without a sensor ShiftSail estimates the wind from your tacks. A Bluetooth wind sensor on the mast measures it directly, so ShiftSail sees every shift at once and also estimates the current better.

What to look for
  • Bluetooth, so no cables down the mast
  • Ultrasonic, with no moving parts
  • Solar or long battery life
  • Needs ShiftSail Pro
